2026 Competition Presentation

Cascais Opera is an International Vocal Competition based in Cascais, Portugal, created with the aim of supporting, promoting, and giving visibility to young talent. The competition offers singers aged 18 to 32 the opportunity to perform before a prestigious international jury, gaining recognition and new opportunities in the opera world.

Designed to provide a complete artistic experience, Cascais Opera stands out for its combination of live competition rounds, masterclasses, performance opportunities, specialised feedback, and a strong educational dimension.

A member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) and Opera Latinoamerica (OLA), Cascais Opera is part of global networks of excellence, expanding the opportunities available to its participants. In each edition, the jury awards monetary prizes and contracts with international festivals and stages.

Deeply connected to its local territory, Cascais Opera also promotes a sustainable and inclusive cultural vision, involving the community and social partners in a project that brings together art, training, innovation, and social responsibility.

There are places that seem to be born with a natural vocation for art. Cascais is one of them. It is in this setting—where the sea meets the land and tradition is renewed in the present—that the Cascais Opera – International Vocal Competition was born.

There are places that seem to be born with a natural vocation for art. Cascais is one of them. It is in this setting—where the sea meets the land and tradition is renewed in the present—that the Cascais Opera – International Vocal Competition was born.
The Cascais Opera was created with the ambition of being more than just a competition. It is a meeting point between generations and cultures, a space for training, sharing, and discovery. Through masterclasses, mentoring sessions, and personalized feedback, the competition also embraces an educational mission, helping to train and inspire the next generation of opera artists.

We pay tribute to great figures in the history of opera, perpetuating their inspiration through the Teresa Berganza, Maurício Bensaúde, and Carlos Gomes Prizes. These names represent the artistic legacy, passion, and rigor that the competition seeks to celebrate and transmit.

The Final takes place at the Grand Auditorium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, one of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls and a symbol of excellence and cultural exchange. On this stage, the finalists have the honor of performing with the Cascais Symphony Orchestra, in a night that marks the culmination of an intense journey of learning and achievement.
But the Cascais Opera is more than a musical excellence event — it is a project deeply connected to its territory. The various stages of the competition take place in iconic venues of the Cascais Museum Quarter, strengthening the link between culture, identity, community, and heritage.

Sustainability is another key pillar of this project. From reusing materials and encouraging sustainable mobility to creating local partnerships with cultural associations and institutions, the Cascais Opera strives to reduce its environmental footprint while amplifying its social impact. It stands as an example of how art can be a tool for positive transformation — promoting inclusion, circular economy, access to culture, and attracting new audiences to opera.

The ambition is clear: to establish the Cascais Opera as one of the most prestigious vocal competitions of our time, recognized for its artistic excellence, the quality of its juries, and the genuine international career opportunities it offers its participants.
The true heart of the project, however, lies in its atmosphere — one of sharing, friendship, and discovery that reflects the welcoming spirit of Cascais and of the entire team.

Over the past three decades, primarily in London, Portugal and Amsterdam, Dr Jorge Balça
has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage
director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms), a teacher and workshop leader, a presentation
skills, acting and creativity coach, and practice-based researcher. His work in all these
domains is distinguished by his commitment to and skill in making fantasy and invention
emerge from precise knowledge and training – and by his ability to inspire a similar alchemy
in his collaborators.

Classically trained as an actor and countertenor, he studied theatre directing in London and
Moscow, specialising in Shakespeare, techniques of adaptation, Meyerhold and commedia
dell’arte. Jorge also holds a PhD exploring the dramatic training of opera performers.
With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy
and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking, and physically engaged.
He was the artistic director of Bloomsbury Opera and associate director of The Opera
Makers, both in London. In Portugal, he has recently directed L’Heure Espagnole and The
Turn of the Screw at Centro Cultural de Belém, and Don Giovanni and La Voix Humaine at
Festival de Ópera de Óbidos.

Jorge is committed to his work as a teacher, having taught at the Dutch National Opera
Academy, Morley College London, Universidade de Évora and other institutions. He
maintains an international coaching private practice and is the acting coach at the Neil
Semer Vocal Institute in Italy.
