Cascais Ópera and Sustainability: Art with Purpose

highlight

Beyond artistic excellence, this international vocal competition is deeply committed to sustainability, aligning itself with several Sustainable Development Goals by promoting culture, education, and inclusion through initiatives that combine creativity, reuse and positive social impact.

In this second edition, several initiatives were carried out to embody this commitment to social, environmental and community responsibility. A partnership was established with the associations Gaivotas da Torre and Centro Paroquial do Estoril, to which an industrial sewing machine was donated. The women supported by these organizations accepted the challenge of transforming the communication materials from the first edition of the competition into new, useful objects with a unique identity. The result was a collective effort—crafted by many hands—with care, creativity, and purpose.

With the guidance of Cascais Opera’s co-designer, these women set to work and created a collection of unique products inspired by the world of the competition—an activity that not only reduces waste but also fosters creativity, develops new skills, and promotes social inclusion. One of the key goals was also to bring these communities closer to the world of opera—so the women were invited to attend the live audition rounds at the Centro Cultural de Cascais. It was their very first time experiencing an opera performance in person, making the moment more special and memorable.

Cascais Opera believes that culture and classical music can—and should—be agents of positive change, not only by promoting talent but also through concrete actions that contribute to a more just, inclusive and balanced society.

By integrating sustainability principles and practices, Cascais Opera embraces the mission of contributing to a more responsible cultural sector—attuned to today’s challenges and committed to the future. Because making opera in the 21st century also means caring for the planet, people, and communities.

other news

Over the past three decades, primarily in London, Portugal and Amsterdam, Dr Jorge Balça
has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage
director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms), a teacher and workshop leader, a presentation
skills, acting and creativity coach, and practice-based researcher. His work in all these
domains is distinguished by his commitment to and skill in making fantasy and invention
emerge from precise knowledge and training – and by his ability to inspire a similar alchemy
in his collaborators.

Classically trained as an actor and countertenor, he studied theatre directing in London and
Moscow, specialising in Shakespeare, techniques of adaptation, Meyerhold and commedia
dell’arte. Jorge also holds a PhD exploring the dramatic training of opera performers.
With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy
and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking, and physically engaged.
He was the artistic director of Bloomsbury Opera and associate director of The Opera
Makers, both in London. In Portugal, he has recently directed L’Heure Espagnole and The
Turn of the Screw at Centro Cultural de Belém, and Don Giovanni and La Voix Humaine at
Festival de Ópera de Óbidos.

Jorge is committed to his work as a teacher, having taught at the Dutch National Opera
Academy, Morley College London, Universidade de Évora and other institutions. He
maintains an international coaching private practice and is the acting coach at the Neil
Semer Vocal Institute in Italy.
