Cascais Opera celebrates nature and fosters connection among artists during a special outdoor day

highlight

On May 1st, the contestants were invited to enjoy an outdoor experience designed to promote well-being, connection with nature, and camaraderie among the participants of this international event.

The day began at the Chapel of Malveira da Serra, where the group gathered before setting off on a scenic walk to the Abano Fort, located along the Atlantic coast. The natural landscape of the Cascais region — with its cliffs, native vegetation and breathtaking sea views — provided the perfect setting to strengthen the bond between participants and the territory that hosts the competition.

At Abano Fort, the group took part in a meditation session — a moment of pause and introspection in a place steeped in history and tranquillity. The day, which reinforced the spirit of community and sharing that defines Cascais Opera, concluded with a relaxed picnic in Marechal Carmona Park, one of the town’s green parks.

For the young singers, who were joined by members of the organisation and other guests, this was an opportunity to explore the natural surroundings of Cascais in an informal, peaceful atmosphere — a welcome break from the competitive rhythm of the event.

This initiative aligns with one of Cascais Opera’s core goals: to showcase the town of Cascais in all its diversity, far beyond the stages and concert halls. In recent days, participants have visited cultural venues such as the Cascais Cultural Centre, the Paula Rego House of Stories, the Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum, Casa Sommer and the Palácio da Cidadela, which have hosted auditions, masterclasses, and the semifinalists’ concert.

The activities on May 1st further deepened this journey, connecting the artistic experience with the natural beauty of the region — inviting participants to draw inspiration not only from music, but also from the stunning landscape and the welcoming spirit of Cascais.

Over the past three decades, primarily in London, Portugal and Amsterdam, Dr Jorge Balça
has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage
director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms), a teacher and workshop leader, a presentation
skills, acting and creativity coach, and practice-based researcher. His work in all these
domains is distinguished by his commitment to and skill in making fantasy and invention
emerge from precise knowledge and training – and by his ability to inspire a similar alchemy
in his collaborators.

Classically trained as an actor and countertenor, he studied theatre directing in London and
Moscow, specialising in Shakespeare, techniques of adaptation, Meyerhold and commedia
dell’arte. Jorge also holds a PhD exploring the dramatic training of opera performers.
With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy
and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking, and physically engaged.
He was the artistic director of Bloomsbury Opera and associate director of The Opera
Makers, both in London. In Portugal, he has recently directed L’Heure Espagnole and The
Turn of the Screw at Centro Cultural de Belém, and Don Giovanni and La Voix Humaine at
Festival de Ópera de Óbidos.

Jorge is committed to his work as a teacher, having taught at the Dutch National Opera
Academy, Morley College London, Universidade de Évora and other institutions. He
maintains an international coaching private practice and is the acting coach at the Neil
Semer Vocal Institute in Italy.
