Meet the 8 finalists of the second edition of Cascais Opera

highlight

The Final of Cascais Ópera takes place at the Grand Auditorium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Anna Tetruashvili (Israel, Mezzo-Soprano, 27), Laura Brasó (Spain, Soprano, 29), Viktor Aksentijević (Serbia, Baritone, 29), Defne Celik (Germany, Soprano, 21), Ana Rita Coelho (Portugal, Mezzo-Soprano, 30), JaeWoung Lee (South Korea, Bass, 31), Manhan Qi (China, Soprano, 26), and Sehyun Kyung (South Korea, Tenor, 31) are the eight finalists from seven countries, selected from among over thirty singers who participated in the live audition rounds.

As in the first elimination round, the announcement of the finalists was followed by a feedback session from the jury for the singers who did not move on to the next stage of the competition.

Supporting the development of young artists is one of the main goals of Cascais Ópera 2025, which is much more than just a singing competition. In this spirit, those who are no longer competing for the final prizes still have the opportunity to attend free masterclasses led by baritone Sergei Leiferkus, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, and soprano Anna Samuil (for female voices).

Despite a nationwide power outage, the show went on! The semifinals continued by piano accompaniment, thanks to the resilience of the performers and the dedication of the organizing team — supported by an engaged audience, including current and former competitors who stayed to watch and cheer on their fellow singers.

The competition culminates on May 4, at 5:00 PM, at the Grand Auditorium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with a live performance where the finalists will sing some of opera’s most iconic arias, accompanied by the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Antonio Pirolli.

Tickets are already on sale via Ticketline, priced between €15 and €30.

This edition’s prizes exceed €40,000 in value, and in addition to monetary awards, contracts will also be granted with prestigious festivals and opera houses.

Over the past three decades, primarily in London, Portugal and Amsterdam, Dr Jorge Balça
has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage
director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms), a teacher and workshop leader, a presentation
skills, acting and creativity coach, and practice-based researcher. His work in all these
domains is distinguished by his commitment to and skill in making fantasy and invention
emerge from precise knowledge and training – and by his ability to inspire a similar alchemy
in his collaborators.

Classically trained as an actor and countertenor, he studied theatre directing in London and
Moscow, specialising in Shakespeare, techniques of adaptation, Meyerhold and commedia
dell’arte. Jorge also holds a PhD exploring the dramatic training of opera performers.
With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy
and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking, and physically engaged.
He was the artistic director of Bloomsbury Opera and associate director of The Opera
Makers, both in London. In Portugal, he has recently directed L’Heure Espagnole and The
Turn of the Screw at Centro Cultural de Belém, and Don Giovanni and La Voix Humaine at
Festival de Ópera de Óbidos.

Jorge is committed to his work as a teacher, having taught at the Dutch National Opera
Academy, Morley College London, Universidade de Évora and other institutions. He
maintains an international coaching private practice and is the acting coach at the Neil
Semer Vocal Institute in Italy.
