The third edition of Cascais Opera confirmed the project’s sustained international growth, attracting a record 499 applications from 59 countries and bringing together 40 outstanding young opera singers in Cascais. Over ten days, the competition once again established itself as a platform for discovery, artistic development and exchange, enriching the participants’ experience while introducing new audiences to opera.
For the first time, the edition opened with an Opening Concert, bringing together acclaimed artists, former laureates and the public in a celebratory event that marked the beginning of the competition. The educational dimension remained one of the project’s cornerstones, with an expanded programme of masterclasses and feedback sessions led by internationally renowned artists and opera professionals.
Beyond the competitive rounds, the Semifinalists’ Concert, entirely dedicated to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, offered the young singers a further opportunity to perform on stage, this time in a semi-staged production, enriching their artistic experience and strengthening their connection with the audience. The programme also included the Nature Intermezzo, featuring a boat trip designed to promote wellbeing, a closer connection with nature, and informal interaction between contestants, jury members, mentors and the organising team, reinforcing the strong sense of community that defines Cascais Opera.
The edition concluded with the Final Concert at the Grand Auditorium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, where the eight finalists performed with the Cascais Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Antonio Pirolli, before an audience of 970 spectators, who also took part in selecting the RTP Audience Prize winner.
The third edition of Cascais Opera was once again held under the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic and was also awarded the High Patronage of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

The 2026 edition brought together an ambitious programme that combined competition, artistic training, performance opportunities, and audience engagement. Across ten days, young opera singers from around the world took part in public competition rounds, masterclasses, the Mozart Semifinalists’ Concert, the Nature Intermezzo, and the Final Concert, benefiting from close interaction with an internationally distinguished jury and leading opera professionals.
The Opening Session featured addresses by Professor Salvato Teles de Menezes, President of the D. Luís I Foundation, and the three founders of Cascais Opera — Alexandra Maurício, Adriano Jordão and Sergei Leiferkus — who welcomed the contestants, jury members, partners and representatives of the official institutions.
The session also included a moving address by Ana Rita Coelho, winner of the Grand Prix Égide 2025, who shared her experience of the competition and reflected on the impact it had on her artistic journey, offering words of encouragement to this year’s participants.
The Opening Concert, held at the Auditório Senhora da Boa Nova, officially launched the third edition of Cascais Opera. The programme featured soprano Sílvia Sequeira, winner of the Teresa Berganza First Prize, presented by Fundación “la Caixa” in collaboration with BPI, and the RTP Audience Prize in 2025, alongside tenor John Pumphrey and baritone Sergei Leiferkus. The concert also featured the Lisboa Cantat Symphony Choir and the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Nikolay Lalov.
Throughout the public preliminary rounds, the 40 selected young singers showcased their talent and artistic preparation before an international jury.
Entirely dedicated to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Semifinalists’ Concert offered the young performers the opportunity to return to the stage in a non-competitive setting through a semi-staged performance.
A moment of relaxation and conviviality, bringing together contestants, jury members and the organising team in an inspiring outdoor setting.
The Final Concert brought together the eight finalists, accompanied by the Cascais Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Antonio Pirolli, in a celebration of opera and outstanding young talent.
The success of Cascais Opera is built through collaboration. We extend our sincere gratitude to our patrons and partners for sharing our vision and making possible a project that invests in the future of opera, supports the next generation of artists, and brings opera closer to new audiences.
Over the past three decades, primarily in London, Portugal and Amsterdam, Dr Jorge Balça
has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage
director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms), a teacher and workshop leader, a presentation
skills, acting and creativity coach, and practice-based researcher. His work in all these
domains is distinguished by his commitment to and skill in making fantasy and invention
emerge from precise knowledge and training – and by his ability to inspire a similar alchemy
in his collaborators.
Classically trained as an actor and countertenor, he studied theatre directing in London and
Moscow, specialising in Shakespeare, techniques of adaptation, Meyerhold and commedia

With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy
and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking, and physically engaged.
He was the artistic director of Bloomsbury Opera and associate director of The Opera
