Cascais Ópera na 18.ª Conferência Anual de Ópera Latinoamérica

O Cascais Ópera marcou presença na 18.ª Conferência Anual de Ópera Latinoamérica (OLA), que decorreu de 17 a 20 de junho em Valência, Espanha, no emblemático Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.

Sob o tema “Teatros: Públicos e Ideias do Futuro”, o encontro reuniu mais de 45 membros da rede OLA — entre diretores de teatros, gestores culturais, artistas e especialistas das indústrias criativas ibero-americanas e Europa — para debater os desafios atuais e futuros do setor lírico e das artes performativas.

Membro da rede OLA, o Cascais Ópera reforçou com esta participação o seu posicionamento no panorama operático internacional, dando visibilidade ao seu compromisso com a excelência artística, a formação de jovens talentos e a sustentabilidade cultural, social e ambiental.

Durante a conferência, o projeto português apresentou a sua missão e percurso, que se tem afirmado como plataforma de descoberta, apoio e projeção de novas vozes no cenário global e na qual Alexandra Maurício, diretora-geral do Cascais Ópera sublinhou “Vimos apresentar o Cascais Ópera e convidar os membros da OLA a juntarem-se a nós, criando novas oportunidades para os nossos candidatos, com mais prémios, tournées pela América Latina, convidamo-vos a integrar o Júri em futuras edições e queremos mais candidatos deste continente no Concurso, vamos fazer mais e melhor pela ópera.” 

O evento propôs uma reflexão alargada sobre o papel das instituições culturais na sociedade contemporânea, abordando temas como novos modelos de programação, diversificação de públicos, liderança feminina, desenvolvimento profissional e transição digital e ambiental. Entre os destaques esteve o lançamento do “Livro Verde para Teatros”, um guia estratégico que pretende apoiar as organizações na implementação de práticas mais sustentáveis.

A participação do Cascais Ópera nesta conferência sublinhou o seu papel como agente de transformação no setor lírico, promovendo novas colaborações internacionais e consolidando a presença de Portugal no circuito operático ibero-americano.

Over the past three decades, primarily in London, Portugal and Amsterdam, Dr Jorge Balça
has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage
director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms), a teacher and workshop leader, a presentation
skills, acting and creativity coach, and practice-based researcher. His work in all these
domains is distinguished by his commitment to and skill in making fantasy and invention
emerge from precise knowledge and training – and by his ability to inspire a similar alchemy
in his collaborators.

Classically trained as an actor and countertenor, he studied theatre directing in London and
Moscow, specialising in Shakespeare, techniques of adaptation, Meyerhold and commedia
dell’arte. Jorge also holds a PhD exploring the dramatic training of opera performers.
With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy
and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking, and physically engaged.
He was the artistic director of Bloomsbury Opera and associate director of The Opera
Makers, both in London. In Portugal, he has recently directed L’Heure Espagnole and The
Turn of the Screw at Centro Cultural de Belém, and Don Giovanni and La Voix Humaine at
Festival de Ópera de Óbidos.

Jorge is committed to his work as a teacher, having taught at the Dutch National Opera
Academy, Morley College London, Universidade de Évora and other institutions. He
maintains an international coaching private practice and is the acting coach at the Neil
Semer Vocal Institute in Italy.
